Kitchen Design - Induction Cooking
Think about this - what goes around comes around! The kitchen appliance industry is no different than any other. Approximately 20 years ago a company named Fagor introduced Induction Cooking to the consumer market. Not long after that the JennAir Company (famous for the first downdraft ventilation systems) picked up on the new concept and offered Induction Modules on their ranges. Unfortunately, the concept was not received well by the consumer and both companies discontinued distribution in the US.
Fast forward to 2005. Induction cooking is introduced again. This time most of the major manufacturers have introduces a version of the units. To explain Induction Cooking simply: the technical name is "electromagnetic induction cooking". To produce this energy a magnetic power generator is placed under the glass cooking surface. The generator is activated by a knob or LED control. However, heat is not produced until a "magnet" compatible object is placed on the surface, creating a magnetic field. The energy in the magnetic field creates movement in the food molecules, similar in concept with microwave cooking where microwave energy creates movement in the food molecules as opposed to direct gas or electric cooking where the heat source heath the pan and the heat is then transfered to heat the food.
Some appropriate cooking utensils for Induction Cooking will be made of Iron or Steel. A good test is to use a magnet. If it sticks to the cookware the cookware will work. Many companies are providing special pots and pans as add on accessories. The best cookware will have a flat bottom as it will make better contact with the glass surface thus producing more even cooking.
From what I have been told it takes a short time to adjust to this type of cooking. But, the effort is well worth the results in the food and the the energy savings.

Kitchen Design - Water Filtration
Water Filtration is one of the "hot" appliances for the kitchen as well as other spaces in the house.
The simplest type of filtration is the carbon filter. They are available in the simplest form of a pitcher filter, up to an including, inline filters for your sink, icemaker and refrigerator dispensers.
The second type of filter is a reverse osmosis filter which is mostly available as an under sink unit. A reverse osmosis combines a sediment filter, carbon filter and a membrane filter. It takes out more impurities than a carbon filter but also takes good things out including floride. it also takes about 3 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of pure water. This type of filter also can reduce water pressure.
A third and newest filtration is available from PlusOne. "Their exclusive dual-filter system installs in seconds and uses a combination of carbon filtration, ion exchange and sub-micron filtration to produce truly healthy, great-tasting water from your kitchen tap. Using the latest two-stage water filtration technology, the countertop (or under-sink) units filter out the most contaminants of any filter on the market. The first cartridge filters out sediment and tiny microscopic particles and chlorine. The second cartridge features a complex ion exchange process that enhances the mineral balance of water while taking out the lead. This supercharged water system also helps maintain healthy pH levels.
Municipal water supplies can't completely filter out many common pollutants and chemical contaminants. In fact, some chlorine stays in after processing and ends up in the tap water you drink. Kitchen Design - The New Double Bowl Sink
I am typically not an advocate of Double Bowl sinks in the kitchen. They take up a lot of space and neither bowl is ever large enough to soak and wash a large pan. I usually recommend an oversize single bowl.
Kohler recently introduced a bowl they call the " Smart Divide"TM Kitchen Sink. As described by Kohler as "Bridging the gap between form and function and proof that sometimes less is indeed more. Smart Divide kitchen sinks feature innovative, patent-pending low profile dividers. Because the top of the divider is situated deeper inside the basin area, Kohler Smart Divide sinks are better able to accomodate larger pots, and also make it easier to keep water

Kitchen Design - New Microwave
Kitchen Design – New Microwave Oven
Not since Amana discontinued the pull-down door on it’s microwave ovens have we had any options in the direction the door opens on microwave ovens. This leads to placement issues in many kitchen designs as all other microwave ovens are the hinged left.
Well we now have a choice in a built in microwave from Electrolux. This new microwave has a pull-door. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all microwave manufacturers gave consumers the same choices in microwave ovens as is given in refrigeration with the choice of a right or left hinged door?
