They are in a new townhome with an upscale kitchen. The builder allowed 2 critical mistakes in the design of the kitchen.

The first is the position of the dishwasher in relation to the sink. The double bowl sink is on a peninsula with the dishwasher at right angles to it within 3” of the corner. With the dishwasher door open you can barely reach into the sink to retreve the scrapped dishes.

The second is a pet peeve of mine. The only oven was an undercabinet oven. I have no problem having this as a second oven but as the only oven is literally a pain in the neck and back to be using all of the time. These ovens are very low first because they start under the counter and second because the the control panel pushes the door and racks down anywhere from 4”-6” and faces straight forwaard forcing the used to stoop to see and program the panel. An alternative option in a small kitchen would be a range instead of a cooktop and undercounter oven which puts the control panel to the top face of the unit or behind the back of the burners. Both places are usually easy to read.

I want to share with you a Free social networking web portal that I was introduced to recently that pays 70% of its’ advertising revenue to the members. Happy New Year! I do need to be more diligent with posts this year. As with all of the economy the Kitchen Industry has had it's issues. The worst seem to be over and the Kitchen Cabinet industry is recovering. One of my goals for the year is to build my on-line long distance design practice.

I will be starting a mentoring program for aspiring Kitchen Designers and Interior Designers looking to get into the Kitchen Industry. The program will follow all of the NKBA Guidelines and will encourage mentee(s) to take NKBA approved classes. I will to be "hands on and one on one" guiding the mentee(s) through the day to day process of designing & selling kitchen projects. If you know anyone that may be interested please have them contact me.

Below is a testimonial from a former Intern:
As an Interior Design major specializing in Kitchen and Bath Design at Virginia Tech I was required to do work study hours as part of my course requirements. I was lucky enough to do this internship with Joan Eisenberg. At the time Joan was working with a large furniture manufacturer to start up a kitchen and bath division. She had the large responsibility of creating their showroom displays, supervising install of these displays, merchandising the displays AND training their staff to design and sell a product line that was very new to them. I have not yet come across another person in this industry (in my now 14 years of experience) who could have pulled off the task at hand as flawlessly as she. Her experience in the Kitchen and Bath industry and her creativity as a designer is apparent; plus she has a kind and patient demeanor that her students and peers really respond to. She is a true professional in every sense of the word. I would highly recommend her as an instructor to anyone looking to become certified in the kitchen and bath industry or to increase their knowledge of this field.

Kimberly P. Being in the construction industry for almost 30 years you would think I would be prepared for delays and surprises. As the owner I wanted this done yesterday! The surprises are all corrected and the delays are over and the "little house on Miles" is ready to become someone's home.

It is the perfect starter home for a single or couple. It is near Johns Hopkins University (JHU). For any of my "Kosher" readers it is within the new JHU "Eruv". It would be perfect for student or faculity. With all the benefits of condo living, however, there are also some restrictions—especially when it comes to remodeling. Space is often limited and plumbing is fixed. Plus, condo dwellers have to consider their neighbors, both in terms of common walls and the hours when construction noise is acceptable.

Award-winning designer Susan Serra, CKD, owner of Susan Serra Associates, Inc. in Northport, NY, is blogging (on TheKitchenDesigner.org) about her experiences renovating her Manhattan pied-à-terre. K+BB caught up with Serra to ask her about the unique experience of remodeling a condo kitchen, both from her professional and personal experience.

Q: What makes designing a kitchen for a condo different than designing one for a house?

A: Designing a condo kitchen must appeal to the mainstream with a transitional theme, as opposed to a personal style or a specific theme. The kitchen must at once appear to be attractive and functional.

Q: What are the biggest challenges of designing a kitchen for a condo?

A: Not wasting space, such as around the refrigerator, is important, as is designing in adequate counter space. Appliance location that makes sense is critical. Paying attention to movement and traffic flow is first and foremost.

Q: How do you solve those challenges?

A: A false wall behind an island or peninsula can direct a sink vent to a better location. Simple styling, such as recessed or flat doors, as opposed to raised panel, will help the space flow. Avoid the use of bold colors and instead use a monochromatic or other soft color scheme to make the space appear to be larger. Beware of an island being an obstacle with insufficient aisles surrounding it.

Q: How do you maintain value for resale?

A: I'm biased. My product, Hansen [Serra is the U.S. distributor for Hansen kitchen and bath furniture], is eco-friendly, made of solid wood and will last for decades. It gets better as it ages. As a result, value is maintained for the condo owner and building owner as units turn over.

Q: Do you have to be concerned with "over remodeling" your condo as compared to other units in the same building or community?

A: Generally speaking, those who appreciate—key word—quality will respond to quality with interest. However, the geographic location of the condo will also determine just how much costly materials translate into interested buyers.

Live Design Class In Baltimore

On Friday April 17 and 24 - I will be presenting "The Kitchen Conundrum" at Beth's DIY workshop in Baltimore, MD. Here is your chance to make your kitchen work for you. During the first class you will learn the basic principles of kitchen design. You will then go home and draw a kitchen design using these principles and your ideas of what you want. The second time you meet one on one with Joan for a half hour to go over your design and ask questions. For more information about me visit www.mykitchenlady.com . The cost for the class and consult is $100. It would also be a good idea to purchase her kitchen planner on line so that you can learn how to measure your kitchen before class and come to class with some measurements in hand. CDs of the kitchen planner will be available at the class.

To register click this link:
http://www.bethsdiyworkshop.com

Marble Institute of America Launches Consumer Safety Program

Marble Institute of America's Home Approved Stone program, a national stone safety-testing program designed to keep consumers updated on the safety of granite countertops for home use.

For the full story:

http://www.kbbonline.com/kbb/content_display/news-and-features/news/e3iabb39aac80c6a278f481b099fc9c5383

New Tall Dishwasher Drawer Announced by Fisher & Paykel

In the April 1, 2009 newsletter Fisher & Paykel announcer the improved version of their one of a kind Dishwasher.

With over a decade of DishDrawer® manufacturing, we introduce the latest addition by Fisher & Paykel to revolutionize your kitchen; DishDrawer® Tall. What used to be considered an expensive building option reserved for homeowners willing to sacrifice comfort and aesthetic appeal is now becoming a logical and economical choice for any lifestyle.
"Green building doesn't have to be more expensive than standard building, especially if we're discussing renovations" says Hannah Purdy, architect and designer with Walsh & Purdy Architects. "There are more and more products coming on the market all the time - from pressed paper countertops to denim insulation."
A green-built kitchen can save a lot of money, cutting water, energy and product replacement costs. This indicates that appliance brands that have controls and displays that are easy to use are increasingly distinguishing themselves from competitors, according to J.D. Power and Associates’ 2008

Kitchen Appliances Study released last week. “As kitchen appliance features, controls and displays become more sophisticated, it’s particularly important for manufacturers to ensure that the appliances remain intuitive and simple to use, lest owners become frustrated and dissatisfied with their machines," said Dale Haines, J.D. Power’s senior director, real estate and construction
industries. “The fact that price is becoming less important to consumers may reflect owners’ willingness to purchase a more expensive appliance to obtain greater function and value over the life of their machines, which can span 10 to 15 years.”

For the complete article click the link below:
http://www.kitchenbathdesign.com/web/online/Top-Headlines/Ease-of-Use-Most-Satisfying-Factor-for-Customers-Buying-Kitchen-Appliances--Study/53$4962

Comment form "My Kitchen Lady"

The study was fielded between June and July 2008. Read on for eight great kitchen organizing tips.
Sort and toss. Chances are much of your clutter is composed of stuff that isn’t really essential to the day-to-day functioning of your kitchen. Start the cleaning process by purging your cabinets and drawers of gadgets you hardly ever use. Donate the things you don't need, and place rarely-used items in storage.

Get closer. Once you've pared your inventory down to essentials, put them in places that make the most sense. Keep glassware and cups near the refrigerator or sink; utensils, spices and plates near the cooking area; mugs near the coffeemaker.

Divide and conquer. Adding vertical dividers in cabinetry makes it easy to stack cookie sheets and cake pans. For lower cabinets, a simple spin of a lazy susan puts everything within reach so you'll never have to empty them to see what's on hand. Small, inexpensive shelves can double your storage, allowing you to neatly organize the pantry. An under-the-sink caddy stores all your cleaning sprays and wipes.

Use “hidden” space. Free up valuable cabinet and drawer space by installing hooks for coffee mugs and utensils under cabinets. Hang pots from an attractive rack on the ceiling. Make use of blank wall space or a backsplash by adding a utensil rack. Nest and stack pots, bowls and pans to maximize your storage space.
Abolish the junk drawer. There's no need for a "junk drawer" if every item has a designated place. Use small dividers to stop pencils, coupons and gadgets from jumbling together. Keep plastic grocery bags tidy by stuffing them into a dispenser.

Paper trail. If you can’t seem to eliminate the piles of takeout menus, recipes torn out of magazines and other such paper clutter from your kitchen, at least contain them. Sort them into categories, put them into colorful file folders and stow them in magazine binders near your cookbooks.

Play favorites. Group items by how frequently you use them. Put your favorite cookware, dishes and glassware in the front of cabinets for easy access. Store specialty cookware and less-frequently used appliances and utensils like blenders, quesadilla makers, and food processors tucked away but easy to find when you need them.

Smart appliances. If you're considering larger changes to your kitchen, such as buying new appliances or remodeling, a little foresight could save countless hours of clutter-busting down the line. Look for refrigerators that maximize interior space through strategically placed compartments; they'll make it easy to organize leftovers, large soda bottles and produce.

Incorporate accessories. A few key sink accessories can help reduce the need for extra "stuff " in the kitchen by incorporating functionality into the sink itself.

Here are some items to consider: http://www.us.kohler.com/planning/detail.jsp?section=3&nsection=3&nsubsection=4&subsection=4&nitem=1&aid=1150819790621&id=PA1008&ep_mid=40558115&ep_rid=3062427376

Article reprinted courtesy http://www.kohler.com/

Designer's Roundtable Part 8

Designer Roundtable: Most-Used Kitchen and Bath Products
Find out what products and materials designers love to use in their kitchen and bath designs
By Ellen Sturm Niz January 12, 2009 Reprinted from http://www.kbbonline.com/

"We at KBDC love to use Warmly Yours radiant heated floors and Zehnder towel radiators in all of our bath projects. Increased fat
deposits in the cornea and lens lead to an increase in light scattering inside the eye,
making it more difficult for the eye to recognize the visual images. The lens yellows
and absorbs a higher amount of blue wavelengths. Last but not least, weaker ciliary
muscles and an increased rigidity and hardening of the lens reduce our ability to focus
and to adjust to different light levels easily.

Holtkötter has initiated and supported research at the University of Colorado at
Boulder to study and develop the scientific basis of lighting for the aging eye and to
research how good lighting can mitigate the effects of the natural physical changes
that we all are subjected to as time passes. Some of the results of this study are being
incorporated into this series of table, chair-side and floor reading lamps.
The reduction in retinal illuminance requires a light level of more than 100 footcandles
for optimal reading performance. The 75-Watt or 100-Watt Halogen light bulb by
Osram, as well as the shape and construction of the inside of the reflector, allow for
alight level in excess of 100 footcandles. A matte glass diffuser and a reflector that
focuses the light only on the reading material will reduce glare and scattering.
Adjustable dimming controls and the adjustability of the physical reflector location
allow the light levels to be set at the optimal position, reducing the need for the eye
to adjust to different light levels.
Lighting for the Aging Eye
© Holtkötter International, Inc.

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. Arch achieves a strong, purposeful look that brings a new definition of contemporary design to kitchen function. Single-control models include both high-arching and conventional-height spouts with and without pull-out sprays. The clean and ergonomic design of the pull-out spray incorporates a comfortable toggle button on the underside, allowing for easy adjustment from stream to spray. The spray is so well integrated that it resets the expectation of form and function. Arch faucets are available with design-matched accessories including a base plate and a soap dish mountable anywhere on the counter surface.
The Pekoe collection offers stylish simplicity with models to suit every kitchen design recipe. Single-control options include standard high-flow faucets sized for kitchen and bar sinks, and pull-out, pull-down and semi-professional models. Unique to Pekoe is the dramatic Extender, a swivel spray that automatically descends when the unit is turned on and retracts when it’s turned off. Switching from spray to stream settings with a simple twist, Extender easily rotates for full coverage of the sink for washing and rinsing. Two pros provided dozens of tips during a session at the International Builders' Show titled "Universal Design Boot Camp."
The presenters were Christine Fortenberry, president of Fortenberry Homes in Power Springs, Ga., and Rebecca Stahr, owner of LifeSpring Environs, an aging-in-place design firm in Atlanta, Ga.
Stahr said there are four categories of 50-plus home buyers:
Baby Boomers -- born 1946 to 1964
Early Retired -- born 1934 to 1945
Retired -- born 1923 to 1933
Post Retired -- born before 1933
Although both presenters said that universal design benefits people of all ages, Stahr said it's best to select one category to target because the four 50-plus groups have different needs. She also noted that pros have alot of opportunities for retrofitting homes because a majority of the housing stock is more than 30 yearsold.

The two women provided numerous tips for making homes safe and accessible. They said to install:
appliances with digital controls that are large and easy to read
the washer, dryer, and dishwasher at an elevated height so users don't have to bend
side-by-side refrigerators that are easy to reach into
smooth electric cooktops because you can see when they are on
pullout faucets with high necks that are easy to maneuver
plenty of room in front of the toilet and vanity
grab bars, or reinforce walls in showers so grab bars can be added later
a fireplace higher off the ground so they are easier to clean
drawers in kitchen and bath cabinets that slide, glide, lower, and raise
C- and D-shaped door hardware because they are easy to pull
wider-width closet, entry, and interior doors that can accommodate
wheelchairs and the moving of big furniture
sloping exterior entries instead of steps
low thresholds between rooms and in doorways
windows that require less than 8 pounds of pressure to open
light switches at lower heights and electrical outlets at higher heights so they are easier to reach
different textured flooring in adjacent rooms for easier transitions
different colored flooring at the bottom of staircases
lots of bright lighting for older eyes
motion sensors
Fortenberry, who walks with a limp as a result of a car accident, noted she's made mistakes during her 30-
year career. She showed photos of several houses she built for herself that she said she had to sell within a
few years because they were not universally designed.
As for mixing green building with universal design, Stahr contended: "If we go to the effort to make it sustainable, but the person has to move because they can't live there anymore, that is not sustainable."

Stahr ended the session by saying if builders can deliver comfort and convenience to their 50-plus clients, they can expect profits even in this challenging economy.

© Copyright 2009, Hanley Wood, LLC. I was all set in getting a granite countertop and then, after reading and talking to friends, I was told to consider Silestone! Now I don't know what to do! Which is better? Which one is prettier? I would appreciate any help that you may be able to offer! Thanks so much.

Answer
In a nutshell. Both make great countertops. Silestone (engineered stone) is more consistant in color and more stable than many granites as granite may have fisures(natural hairline cracks) where engineered stone does not. All things considered either should give you years of beautiful easy care living. Hope this helps.

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. Investigate what companies are offering. Take time to visit websites of some of the major manufacturers. Most of these companies show samples of how to make their cabinets have a custom look. Visit independent dealers and home centers for design ideas. Shelter magazines also have great photos and ideas.

Take advantage of finishing materials that are available from most stock cabinet companies to create a custom feel to your project. Items such as decorative end panels for exposed cabinet sides, using deep end panels and valances if necessary to box in refrigerators, valances attached to the bottom of wall cabinets to hide undercabinet lighting, finished panels with appropriate sided doors to create appliance panels, creative use of moldings, etc, etc, etc….

Today most cabinet are including optional accessories as part of their offerings. Some of the more standard accessories available are tilt-down drawer fronts with attached storage bins for the sink or cooktop area, half round turn-outs for base blind cabinets, full revolving corner mechanisms for both wall and base cabinets and roll-out trays for base and pantry cabinets. If a particular company doesn’t supply the accessory you are looking for, there are companies that manufacturer add-on accessories for national distribution. Additional items that you may want to consider are towel racks, cutlery partitions, bread drawers, specialized spice storage or multiple compartment trash containers. Kitchen organizers that mount under wall cabinets such as: message centers, cookbook holders, knife racks and spice storage are available from several manufacturers.

Another way to customize stock cabinets is to use creative arrangements of the cabinets available. Create a plant or all purpose shelf by using a shorter than normal cabinet between to other cabinets and adding a shelf below it. Create a lower baking center or desk area by using vanity cabinets. A spice rack can be made from valances and gallery rail or consider mid-way shelving between the counter and wall cabinets. Many times wall cabinets are used as base cabinets to achieve a shallow depth. A toe base will need to be added to a 30” high wall cabinet to maintain a standard 36” high counter. This same principle can be applied to corner wall cabinets for use in creating unusual shapes for islands or to transition back to a shallower depth at the end of an open run. The possibilities for creating are unlimited. Your imagination is your greatest asset and it’s free.

The “stock cabinet image is becoming an idea of the past. A creative design using fully accessorized “stock” cabinets is a wiser choice than an unimaginative, poorly accessorized plan using “custom” cabinets costing the same amount or more. The secret is to define your budget and your needs and work with your designer and/or cabinet supplier to get the best mix of quality in design and product to meet your needs and priorities.

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. Do not feel that you are being short changed in either the creative or the functional areas of the project. The stock cabinet industry has upgraded itself to a point that the creative designer in conjunction with a skilled finish carpenter can, in most cases, successfully complete even the most sophisticated projects.

Before we go any further, it is important to define what is a “stock” cabinet and what is a “custom” cabinet. Basically a “stock” cabinet company is one that builds cabinets in specific sizes (generally the industry standard of 3” increments) and finishes and will not deviate in height, width, or depth or make “specials”. Semi-custom cabinet manufacturers generally build their basic line to the 3” standard increment. However, they are willing, at a premium, to change the height, width and depth of a cabinet. In addition to what “semi-custom” manufacturers offer, “custom” manufacturers will make what they call “specials”. These are unusual cabinets built to the client’s specifications. Most “custom” manufacturers expect only one or two such cabinets in a minority of the projects they process. A fourth category of manufacturer is what is called a “custom shop”. This is generally a a small local company that builds everything “to fit” without an up-charge (premium) because your cabinet isn’t in 3” modules. There are poor, good, better and best manufacturers in each of these categories. You could conceivably get a stock cabinet made of higher quality materials and better workmanship and quality control than some custom manufacturers produce.

Unfortunately, the public image has been that American “stock” is inferior. Conversely, the public also has the impression that European cabinets, because they are expensive, are custom. This is not always the case. Most European companies are on a modular system and although some allow minor modifications in height, width or depth, they are not “custom” companies. Until recently the beauty of the European system was that they offered many sizes as well as numerous add-on features and accessories that the US companies did not offer. The American “stock” cabinet industry has caught up with this system of options and accessories and because of this all consumers can benefit regardless of budget. This is a frequently discussed topic between consumers and both interior designers and kitchen and bath designers. There is much confusion about the differences in tiles, what type of tile to use where, where to find a reliable tile contractor and lastly, if you choose to use tile, how can you maintain its’ original beauty?

What is ceramic tile? Ceramic tile is composed of a mixture of clay, shale, flint and other earthy materials. These materials are pressed or extruded into shapes and fired in a kiln. Differences in raw materials, changing proportions of materials used, temperature at which it is fired, finishes applied and the size of the finished tile all affect where a particular tile should be used.

Tiles are classified in several ways: by size, by materials, and by surface finish. Four common types of tiles are glazed, ceramic mosaic, quarry and decorative.

Glazed Tiles - have a coating of glass forming minerals and ceramic stains applied to the surface before firing. The finished surface may have a shiny luster.

Ceramic Mosaic - are distinguished by their small size (maximum 6 square inches, if square shape 2.45"x 2.45"). These tiles may be glazed or unglazed. The most common types are made of natural clay or porcelain and have a consistent color throughout, rather than a white body with color applied to the surface.

Quarry Tile - is made from shale, clays or earth extruded to produce an UNGLAZED product which has color throughout. This type of tile is extremely porous and may sometimes need to have a sealer applied to protect it's surface.

Decorative Tile - are generally used as accent pieces in such places as wall borders or kitchen backsplashes. They may have a raised or recessed relief pattern, or a painted or silk screened design. These types of tiles are suitable for vertical surfaces as they are hard to clean and are often very delicate.

Finding a good tile contractor isn't always easy. One good source is a reputable wholesale tile showroom. These people end up hearing complaints about poor installation and generally know which contractors have the fewest problems.

Tile manufacturers give three reasons for using ceramic tile. First, it is DURABLE, second it is BEAUTIFUL, and third it is likely to add VALUE to the home. I add a fourth plus to using ceramic tile: ease of maintenance. If recommended procedures are followed routine cleaning can be achieved most often with an all purpose cleaner. Today's grout products are greatly improved and easier to maintain than in years past.

Many manufacturers offer excellent consumer information on tile care and maintenance. They give details on how to handle special problems as well as the best way to enhance the original beauty of your tile. I have provided links to the Care and Maintenance sections of several companies.

http://www.americanolean.com/tile_care.cfm

http://www.daltileproducts.com/careandmaint.cfm

http://www.ahnzu.com/care_maintanenance.cfm

Because of the vast number of shapes, sizes and types of tiles as well as a multitude of domestic and foreign manufacturers it is impossible to give details as to what to use where. Again, the best sources for information will be manufacturer internet sites and your local wholesale tile showroom. The showroom staff are fully informed as to which of their tiles should be used where. They will be happy to share this information with you and or your designer or contractor.

As with any product you buy, but especially one as permanent as tile, become an educated consumer BEFORE you buy.

For an on-line tile source click this link:
www.mykitchenlady.com/resources.html

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. Drain location and distance from plumbing stack/vent

2. Air ducts, soil, vent and water pipes that are concealed in the walls. We are not expected to be clairvoyant. However good look at what is above, below and around the kitchen can often give a clue to potential hidden problems. Unfortunately there will be times when you can’t possibly know what is hidden. I remember a kitchen where an old drain pipe from a washing machine (no longer in the kitchen) was concealed behind the dishwasher in a house that was built on a concrete slab. Needless to say I don’t routinely pull-out the dishwasher when I measure. During installation we had to modify the new cabinet (the dishwasher had changed locations) to allow for the pipe.

3. Exterior wall construction
4. Electrical Systems
5. Heating/ Air Conditioning – Ducts, Radiators, Pipes
6. Load bearing walls
7. Appliances that will be reused
8. Overview of surrounding rooms – Above below and on the same level

9. Unusual situations that need to be considered – The highrise building dilemma – What is the maximum size cabinet or appliance that you can get into the building? Also although not related to measuring, will the water in the entire building need to be turned off during installation or are there individual shut-off valves for each unit in the building.

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. The kitchen appliance industry is no different than any other. Approximately 20 years ago a company named Fagor introduced Induction Cooking to the consumer market. Not long after that the JennAir Company (famous for the first downdraft ventilation systems) picked up on the new concept and offered Induction Modules on their ranges. Unfortunately, the concept was not received well by the consumer and both companies discontinued distribution in the US.

Fast forward to 2005. Induction cooking is introduced again. This time most of the major manufacturers have introduces a version of the units. To explain Induction Cooking simply: the technical name is "electromagnetic induction cooking". To produce this energy a magnetic power generator is placed under the glass cooking surface. The generator is activated by a knob or LED control. However, heat is not produced until a "magnet" compatible object is placed on the surface, creating a magnetic field. The energy in the magnetic field creates movement in the food molecules, similar in concept with microwave cooking where microwave energy creates movement in the food molecules as opposed to direct gas or electric cooking where the heat source heath the pan and the heat is then transfered to heat the food.

Some appropriate cooking utensils for Induction Cooking will be made of Iron or Steel. A good test is to use a magnet. If it sticks to the cookware the cookware will work. Many companies are providing special pots and pans as add on accessories. The best cookware will have a flat bottom as it will make better contact with the glass surface thus producing more even cooking.

From what I have been told it takes a short time to adjust to this type of cooking. But, the effort is well worth the results in the food and the the energy savings.

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. Are you totally confused and don't know where or how to start? Here are some guidelines to help you get the kitchen YOU want.

1. Decide: Are you a do-it-yourselfer or will it be a total project for the kitchen specialist or somewhere in-between. Next to the bath the kitchen is the most complicated room to remodel and most difficult to do without.

In deciding who will do what consider the time vs. the money factor as well as the skill level required for the task assigned. For example; if you've never worked with electricity or plumbing the kitchen is not the place to start learning so hire an electrician and/or a plumber. However, if you have experience painting, hanging paper or laying a floor, etc. and if you have the time, than you could save some money by doing those tasks yourself.

2. Discuss and plan an APPROXIMATE budget for the project. An average kitchen today, ranges from $15,000 $25,000 installed, not including appliances, with many going as high as $30,000 $50,000. These figures depend on the size of the room, type and quality of cabinetry and counters and structural changes to be made.

3. Á good planner will analyze your cooking and shopping habits, your likes and dislikes about your present kitchen and other family requirements. It will speed things along if you have thought about these things before you meet with the designer. Also, take time to do some "magazine shopping” to gather ideas about styles, colors and accessories. This will help you and the designer have even more direction in your discussions.

4. Explore with your planner all of the appliance option available. Don't find out too late that the range you bought can't accommodate your big canning pot or that you really would have liked an in-door Bar-B-Q.

5. Select a competent kitchen planner to help design your kitchen. Ask for references and professional qualifications. There are two categories of designers to choose from. First, is the independent designer that is not connected with selling you products or installing the kitchen. They charge a fee for their services, either hourly or flat rate depending on the scope of

the project. Second, is the kitchen salesperson/designer, who, along with selling you products may also offer design services. Be certain this person considers YOUR needs when designing YOUR kitchen. In either case, your planner should work to give you a FUNCTIONAL as well as aesthetically pleasing kitchen.

6. Depending on how you arrive at your kitchen plan, you should have had, or should get estimates from several reputable supply and installation sources. In the case of kitchens as with most other home services the least expensive or most expensive products or services may not be the best buy for you. Be selective and investigate your choices.

These are the very basic steps toward a successful kitchen remodeling project. They can also be applied to anyone planning a kitchen for a new construction project. In either case, remember, without careful planning you can end up with a beautiful but NOT functional kitchen. Always plan for a FUNCTIONAL kitchen that is also beautiful.

Joan Eisenberg, CMKBD, ASID

Joan is an Independent Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Training Consultant. They are available in the simplest form of a pitcher filter, up to an including, inline filters for your sink, icemaker and refrigerator dispensers.
The second type of filter is a reverse osmosis filter which is mostly available as an under sink unit. A reverse osmosis combines a sediment filter, carbon filter and a membrane filter. It takes out more impurities than a carbon filter but also takes good things out including floride. it also takes about 3 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of pure water. This type of filter also can reduce water pressure.
A third and newest filtration is available from PlusOne. "Their exclusive dual-filter system installs in seconds and uses a combination of carbon filtration, ion exchange and sub-micron filtration to produce truly healthy, great-tasting water from your kitchen tap. Using the latest two-stage water filtration technology, the countertop (or under-sink) units filter out the most contaminants of any filter on the market. The first cartridge filters out sediment and tiny microscopic particles and chlorine. The second cartridge features a complex ion exchange process that enhances the mineral balance of water while taking out the lead. This supercharged water system also helps maintain healthy pH levels.
Municipal water supplies can't completely filter out many common pollutants and chemical contaminants. In fact, some chlorine stays in after processing and ends up in the tap water you drink. PlusOne filters remove this chlorine and improve the clarity, taste and odor of your tap water." They take up a lot of space and neither bowl is ever large enough to soak and wash a large pan. I usually recommend an oversize single bowl.

Kohler recently introduced a bowl they call the " Smart Divide"TM Kitchen Sink. As described by Kohler as "Bridging the gap between form and function and proof that sometimes less is indeed more. Smart Divide kitchen sinks feature innovative, patent-pending low profile dividers. Because the top of the divider is situated deeper inside the basin area, Kohler Smart Divide sinks are better able to accomodate larger pots, and also make it easier to keep water
where it belongs - in the sink." It just proves my position that Home Economics is a vital and important career path one that should never have been eliminated from many Universities during the 1990's. I hope you enjoy reading the article.

24A TIMES * SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2005 * ** *

THE NATION

Home economics programs evolve past `Mrs.' degree

Associated Press

ATHENS, Ga. - University of Georgia student Brandon Esco has faced his share of razzing for being a nutrition science major - a field traditionally dominated by women. "You're only in that major because of the girls" is the most common teasing he's heard.
But at the school's College of Family and Consumer Sciences, Esco is part of a growing trend. Five years ago, about 10 percent of the college's students were men. Last year, a third of the 1,700 students - and 40 percent of the tenure-track faculty - were men.

Those changes - shared by other schools nationwide – are helping to undermine the stereo-types long acquainted with home economic programs, often sneeringly chided as a "Mrs." degree. Experts say even the moniker "home ec" itself is outdated: Many
schools have changed program titles to terms such as "human sciences" to reflect a broader nature.

"Our students graduate to become lawyers, loan counselors, directors of day care, dietitians," said Sharon Nickols, dean of UGA's College of Family and Consumer Sciences. `We just don't know their major because they don't say, `I'm a family and consumer scientist.'

The cookie-baking classes and pop quizzes on laundry essentials that once dominated some home ec courses in junior high have broadened into courses geared toward "life skills," including tips for budgeting, and basic knowledge of supply and demand.

Those changes have drawn more male students, said Don Bower, president of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, once called the American Home Economics Association.

"Today's the golden age of home ec," said Dennis Savaiano, the dean of Purdue University's College of Consumer and Family Sciences. `We're directing all the same issues - family, food and finance - in a much broader, societal way. These are issues that transcend the home and reflect society in every way." In the 1950s, Americans recovering from World War II re-emphasized the value of working in the home for women. By the 1970s, programs began to branch out more into niche topics, as child development, marriage counseling and family therapy became separate programs.

Within the past decade, that pace has quickened. It's not uncommon to find schools offering specialized degrees that focus on property management or courses that tackle nutrition and fitness through a neuroscience lens.

Those increasingly specialized programs have helped draw more women and men.

Florida State University's College of Human Sciences, for instance, has taken an athletic training program under its umbrella. Dean Penny Ralston said that's helped the school almost triple in size in seven years and attractmore males.

But there's still the question of how to broaden the appeal of female-friendly programs to males.

"Men need nutrition, counseling and health classes just as much as women," said University of Georgia professor Mary Ann Johnson.

Esco said he was lured to the University of Georgia by the promise of a good pre-dentistry program. But the Royston, Ga., native ended up choosing a nutrition science major instead of a more traditional biology or chemistry track. "They look at nutrition and how it affects your whole body in a holistic way, then break it down to a cellular level," he said of his professors. "And it's so much more - they teach you how to be humble, how to be a leader."

August 11, 2005 First Blog

Blogging is new to me so I will be feeling my way.
